I had the opportunity the other weekend to drive a race car at a Driver's School put on by the Corinthian Vintage Automobile Racing (CVAR) club. Every year they award two scholarships to the workers of the events, such as flaggers like Kim and I. I won one of those scholarships last year for use during this season. This is something I've always wanted to do, and I was grateful for the opportunity.
I drove a 1963 Formcar Formula Vee. These are open-wheel cars based on 1962 VW Beetle technology. It is still a viable class today in SCCA. But this is Vintage racing, and I was driving a car the same age as Kim.... The car was provided by Barron Racing.
Although I have been interested and involved in racing all my life, actually climbing in the cockpit and driving is very different than anything I have experienced. I would like to say I jumped in and immediately became a world-beater, but the reality was quite another matter.
Race cars can be beautiful things, and I took the time during the quiet of early Sunday morning to capture images in the paddock.
All in all, it was a very fun weekend. I was able to do something I have always wanted to do. Many thanks to CVAR and Barron Racing to the opportunity.
